Technology Overview

Algeta is a world leader in the medical application of alpha emitters and the development of alpha-pharmaceuticals, a new class of cancer therapeutic that utilizes the attractive properties of alpha-particle emitters to destroy cancer cells. This position has been developed through the Company's expertise in radiochemistry, nuclear medicine and medical oncology and its strong links via its founders to the University of Oslo and the Rikshospitalet-Radiumhospitalet HF, formerly known as the Norwegian Radium Hospital, a leading cancer research center.

When targeted appropriately, alpha-particle emitters offer the potential to deliver potent and localized destruction of cancer cells with minimal effect on surrounding normal cells. These properties of alpha-pharmaceuticals are also expected to mean they will be well-tolerated and convenient to use.

Radium-223 and thorium-227 are the two most promising alpha-emitting elements (radionuclides) considered suitable for development as therapeutics. Radium-223 forms the basis of Algeta’s lead alpha-pharmaceutical candidate, Alpharadin® and thorium-227 underpins its TH-1 targeted delivery platform.
