Overview

Algeta is committed to working with selected partners to develop important cancer therapeutics based on its alpha-pharmaceutical technology platform. Targeted alpha-emitters can provide highly effective treatments that are well-tolerated, in a product format that is convenient for both patient and physician.

Algeta is working closely with Bayer Schering Pharma in a major partnership to develop our lead therapeutic, Alpharadin®, for global markets, whilst retaining a co-promotion right in the United Sates. This product is being developed as the first choice treatment for patients with certain common cancers who have bone metastases. Initial studies have focussed upon CRPC (castration resistant prostate cancer) and breast cancer.

Algeta is also developing a pipeline of alpha-pharmaceutical products based upon attachment of particular alpha-emitters to targeting molecules, such as antibodies. Many scientists recognise that alpha-emitters may have uniquely attractive properties when used as ‘payloads’ in this way. These potential advantages include:

  • no reliance on patients’ immune effector mechanisms
  • effectiveness without tumour-cell internalisation
  • effectiveness without requirement for cleavage and release of payload
  • an ultra-short range of only two to ten cell diameters
  • a natural bystander effect over this range to overcome tumour-cell heterogeneity
  • extremely potent induction of lethal, double strand DND breaks
  • effectiveness against chemo- and radio-resistant cancer cells
  • effectiveness in hypoxic conditions
  • convenience

We seek to harness these advantages in next-generation products by applying our leading experience and proprietary position in large scale manufacture of our alpha-emitters, novel chemistries, and extensive preclinical and clinical development expertise.
